Department of Health - smoking cessation programme

The Professional Development & Quality Assurance of the Department of Health provides smoking cessation programmes in five Families Clinics namely, Chai Wan Families Clinic, Hong Kong Families Clinic, New Territories Families Clinic, Kowloon Families Clinic and the Education & Training Centre in Family Medicine in Ngau Tau Kok.

The smoking cessation programme is run by a team of healthcare professionals including doctors and nurses. An 8 to 12-week treatment programme is provided to smokers who join the programme. Treatment includes counselling on smoking cessation and pharmacotherapy if indicated.

During the first visit, client’s smoking habit, nicotine dependence, motivation of quitting smoking and the need of pharmacotherapy are assessed before devising a treatment plan. Four counselling sessions in either individual or group basis are offered to clients. Sharing and guidance on physiological and psychological adaptation, behavioural and lifestyle modification, and environmental adjustments will be taught. Regular post-treatment follow-up is provided to clients up to 1 year in order to prevent relapse and provide necessary support to them.
