Two smokers sentenced for assaulting tobacco control inspectors

25 May 2009

Two smokers were convicted by Tuen Mun Magistrates' Court for assaulting Tobacco Control Inspectors (TCI), a spokesman for the Department of Health said today (May 25).

A 45-year-old man was today sentenced to immediate imprisonment for three months for criminal intimidation and assault of TCI.

The incident took place in Green Land Court Restaurant in Grandeur Terrace Shopping Centre, Tin Shui Wai, on March 1. The man was found smoking in the restaurant. He threw his identity card at a TCI and assaulted another one.

The man was subsequently arrested and charged by the Police.

The spokesman noted that another smoker, a 59-year-old man, was sentenced to three weeks' imprisonment suspended for 12 months on May 21.

The spokesman appealed to the public to co-operate with law enforcement officers.

"Intimidation of or use of violence on enforcement officers is a serious offence and carries serious legal consequences," the spokesman said.
